Wish for Butterflies
Many of us have an affinity to butterflies, however, habitat destruction is a key threatening process endangering populations of butterflies nationally.
Butterflies are an important pollinator insect species & about 100 species of butterflies are recorded in this region. Attracting butterflies into your garden or farmland is beneficial for you & them. The movement of pollen is essential for plant fertilisation to develop fruits & seeds needed for reproduction. Choosing to cultivate both native & exotic plants provides nectar & pollen to attract these insects that fly on warm days all year round.
The restoration of native habitats greatly benefits butterfly conservation. Recently we had a great presentation from Suzi Bond Visiting Fellow at ANU who conducts research on butterflies in this region. Here is Suzi’s list for best natives to plant for butterflies:
• Grasses, kangaroo, poa, microlaena
• Wattles
• Bursaria spinosa
• Lomandra filiformis
• Hakea microcarpa
• Matt-rushes
• Kurrajong
• Mistletoes, on eucalypts & casuarinas
• Peas & daisies
• Epacris heaths
• Derwent & digger speedwell
• Dodder vine
• Gahnia subaequiglumis
• Mountain pepper
Many of these plants are grown at the Murrumbateman Landcare Group nursery. We all wish for more butterflies.
